Summer games offer county basketball teams an opportunity to stay sharp

RED BAY – Several local high school basketball teams met at the Red Bay gym Thursday and Friday to polish their skills during the long break between the end of last season and the beginning of next season.
Thursday afternoon boys teams from Phil Campbell, Red Bay, Tharptown and Vina played several games.
Girls teams from Belgreen, Tharptown and Red Bay – along with other teams – played in a tournament Friday.
Boys
Red Bay 52,
Tharptown 47
Red Bay started the second half on a big run to turn a 29-28 deficit into a 50-38 lead, but Tharptown rallied back, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers to cut the score to 50-47.
Tra Elliot hit a pair of free throws for Red Bay to preserve the win.
Phil Campbell 82,
Tharptown 58
Phil Campbell wasted little time taking control of the game as the Bobcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back.
Red Bay 56,
Tharptown 48
Fans were treated to an offensive showcase Thursday as Tharptown and Red Bay combined to hit 20 3-pointers in the Tigers' 56-48 victory.
Red Bay closed out the first half with a 16-7 run to take control of the game.
Girls
Belgreen 54,
Haleyville 21
The Lady Bulldogs used a strong defensive effort to tame the Lady Lions of Haleyville 54-21 Friday.
Belgreen held Haleyville to 11 first-half points while scoring 30 points to put the game away early.
New Site 52,
Tharptown 37
Tharptown struggled on offense early, falling into a 13-2 deficit, and could not recover as New Site rolled to a 52-37 victory.
The Lady Wildcats had a better performance in the second half, outscoring New Site 19-14.
Red Bay 44,
Haleyville 38
The Lady Tigers nearly let a 20-8 halftime lead slip away, but held on for the six-point victory against Haleyville.
The Lady Lions cut the Red Bay advantage to four points, but Hannah Sharp and Morgan McKinney hit two free throws each down the stretch to seal the win.
