HUNTSVILLE – The Red Bay softball team scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Lady Tigers stayed in the winners' bracket of the Region Tournament with an 8-1 win against Clements.
Eight different Red Bay players had hits in the game and Emily Cox picked up the win on the mound by allowing one run on four hits. She struck out one Clements batter and did not issue any walks in five innings of work.
"In the first inning we hit the ball well," said Red Bay coach Donnie Roberts. "That's a good start. The first game is so important."
If Red Bay stays in the winners' bracket, the Lady Tigers can clinch a spot in the state tournament with two more victories. If they fall to the losers' bracket, it would take up to four wins to reach state depending on when they fall to the losers' bracket.
Holly Hammock and Lauren Williams led Red Bay with a single and a double each. Williams added an RBI.
Whitney Sharp, Kirstin Sharp and Cox each had a single and two RBIs while Taylor Hester and Mariah Horton had a single and an RBI each. Hannah Sharp had a single.
Whitney Sharp pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits, striking out one and issuing one walk.
With the win, Red Bay moves on to play Fyffe today at 8 a.m. The game will be played at the Huntsville Sportsplex.
