Finding the perfect gift

By Staff

The other day my sister, Valerie, and I were discussing our annual dilemma – what to get our mom for Mother's Day.
It's not that we don't want to buy anything for Mom; it is just that it is hard to find a great gift for her.
We agreed it was difficult to find the perfect gift since our mother pretty much gets whatever she needs when she needs it and rarely tells us about things she would like to have.
I made the comment gift shopping was difficult with Mother's Day, her birthday and Christmas, but it must be worse for my sister because her two sons have Grandparent's Day to contend with also.
Valerie said it wasn't too bad because her boys usually make a gift for Mom. She said Mom likes those types of gifts – Valerie said she likes getting hand made gifts too.
Then it hit me, I'll make something for Mom. I did it in elementary school, why can't I do it now?
It is a perfect idea for several reasons.
First, it will be hand made. I know my mother will appreciate the time and effort put into creating her gift.
Second, it will satisfy my sense of nostalgia. I often remember my youth fondly and this will give me the opportunity to recapture some of those memories.
And last, but not least, Mom always liked macaroni pictures accented with glitter.
For only ten bucks I can go to the store and make the best looking picture that has ever graced the front of her refrigerator.
Trust me, my artistic skills have improved quite a bit in the last 20 years.
Finally, that cat will actually look like a cat.
I know it sounds cheap, but I know Mom will be proud.
She always tried to teach me the value of a dollar and – with this gift – I can now let her know her efforts did not go unnoticed.
She will be happy to know I put the extra money into a savings account instead of buying some big luxurious gift that would only spoil her and set the bar higher next year.
That is something else she taught me to do – think ahead.
Hey, if I buy in bulk, I will be getting good value and taking care of the next few years at the same time.
It's good that macaroni has a shelf life of about a billion years.
Yeah, that will be the perfect gift.
Actually, I am going to get Mom something she can spoil herself with.
After all, it is the least I could do for all she has done for me.
Hey Mom, I hope you have a great Mother's Day.
