PC Elementary celebrates Dr. Seu Melissa Cason

By Staff
PHIL CAMBPELL – The students at Phil Campbell Elementary spent Friday morning celebrating Dr. Seuss Day as Read Across America week came to a close.
Principal Jackie Ergle said this year's theme is Alabama books and Alabama authors.
"We have been reading Alabama books by Alabama authors this week," Ergle said. "We have an Alabama author here at Phil Campbell Elementary."
Kindergarten teacher Karen Mitchell, author of "Kinderella," talked to the students about the importance of reading and encouraged them to write their own book.
"I know we spend a lot of time telling you to read as many books as you can," Mitchell told the students. "Now, I want you to write a book."
Mitchell told the group about how her love for writing a book started in the third grade when her teacher assigned the class to write a book.
"My teacher picked my book to be read on the local TV station so I did," Mitchell said. "From that moment on, I knew I wanted to write books someday."
While "Kinderella" is Mitchell's only published work, she is working on a second book, "Zack and the Bean Stalk."
"I am just finishing up the pictures for my second book, and I hope that it will be published by this time next year," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said she recently discovered an idea for her third book, but said she could not share it with anyone until the story is written.
In addition to hearing about Mitchell's experience as a writer, the students were awarded certificates and medals for reaching their reading goal set for each child.
Representative Johnny Mack Morrow also visited the school in honor of Dr. Seuss day, and congratulated the students on their reading accomplishments.ss
