Historical marker sign of a proud heritage

Thanks to the efforts of one local man in particular, Franklin County has a third historical marker.
Russellville resident and Newburg native Johnny Davis worked tirelessly to have the Alabama Historical Commission to place a historical marker in that community.
The historical marker was placed near the intersection of Alabama 24 and Franklin 87.
"Newburg is one of the oldest towns in the county," said Chris Ozbirn, director of the Franklin County Archives and Research Center.
The town was known as Old Boston when it was established in 1832. A year later it was named Newburg.
Davis took it upon himself, with the help of several volunteers, to make sure Newburg got recognized for all its history.
The marker serves as a reminder of our county's proud heritage and as a great symbol of what our county has to offer the future.
