Prizes to be given away during breakfast week

Russellville City Schools will present "Power up with School Breakfast" this coming week to encourage students to take advantage of school breakfast.
Child Nutrition Program Coordinator Elaine Vaughn said all four Russellville City Schools will participate in the week, which is a national program to promote healthy eating habits in students.
"National Breakfast Week is March 2 through March 6, and we are trying to get participation at Russellville during the week," Vaughn said.
Local merchants and community leaders have teamed with the schools in promoting the importance of starting the day off with a healthy breakfast.
"Students eating breakfast during National Breakfast Week will be entered into daily drawings for items from local florists, tanning salons, and fitness centers," Vaughn said.
Items to be given away include gas cards, t-shirts, caps and coolers.
There will be a drawing on Friday for larger items. Those students who eat breakfast during the week will have a chance to win the bigger prizes.
"We have $50 savings bonds, pedicures, and sets of nails," Vaughn said.
The big prizes are the two autographed University of Alabama footballs.
"We have a couple of University of Alabama footballs signed by Coach Saban," Vaughn said.
Vaughn said the Russellville Middle School students have been working on helping create a breakfast hero to promote starting your day with a healthy breakfast.
"The local high school art students have painted all the breakfast heroes and they will be displayed at the elementary schools next week," Vaughn said.
Vaughn said the cafeteria staff is excited about the upcoming breakfast week, and encourage all parents to make sure their children are at school in time to participate.
"We also hope to have special guests during the week," Vaughn said. "We have invited several different people to join us including the mayor and city council."
Last week, Mayor Troy Oliver signed a proclamation designating the upcoming week as School Breakfast Week in Russellville.
