Mayfield promoted to central office

Russellville High School principal Rex Mayfield was promoted to the Russellville City School's central office staff during the school board meeting Thursday afternoon.
The board voted 4-0 to approve Mayfield, who has been principal since 2002, for the administrative assistant position left vacant last month when Don Cox was hired as superintendent.
Mayfield, known as "MacGyver" by his fellow administrators for his propensity for repairs, has worked for the last 28 years in the city school system as an agriculture teacher, assistant principal and principal.
"Rex and I have worked together for the past 28 years," Cox said. "We call him MacGyver because he can fix anything. He has a great deal of experience with school maintenance and administration, and above all, he's a great person."
Under Mayfield's guidance, the RHS agriculture program was selected as the state's best in 1996, and he was named agriculture teacher of the year in 1992. After more than 16 years as an ag teacher, Mayfield, who has a master's degree from Alabama A&M and an education specialist degree, from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was an assistant principal for five years before moving into the principal's office.
The board also voted to name Dr. Tim Guinn, an assistant principal at RHS for the last seven years and a former high school principal, as acting principal effective March 1. Guinn, also a lieutenant colonel, earned his master's degree at UNA and his doctorate from Samford University.
Cox said the job description will be posted today through March 13, and he expects the board to fill the opening at the next board meeting March 26.
