THARPTOWN – A new era will begin tonight for the Tharptown football team as it plays the first region game in school history.
The Wildcats will have their work cut out for them as they host Speake, one of the favorites in Class 1A, Region 8.
The Bobcats, which reached the second round of the state playoffs last year, nearly cracked the Top 10 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association preseason poll.
Tharptown coach Barry Laster said his defense has looked good throughout fall practice. He also said several players including senior Zach Sockwell junior Trevor Hallmark have stepped up their efforts to make the defensive unit the best it can be.
Both players were on the first Tharptown football team to win a game. This year they have the opportunity to be on the first Tharptown team to qualify for the playoffs.
Before the Wildcats can do that they have to win some region games. They can get a good start on reaching that goal with a win against Speake tonight.
