All five Franklin County teams will be in action tonight or Saturday as high school football kicks off around the state.
In county action, Tharptown will play its first-ever Class 1A, Region 8 game under the leadership of new coach Barry Laster as the Wildcats host Speake, a perennial playoff contender. Tonight will also mark the debut of Michael Parker at 2A Phil Campbell, which will unveil its veer offense at home against East Lawrence, and Vina will host Shoals Christian in an early battle for a Class 1A, Region 8 playoff berth.
In one of the state's top games, Russellville, ranked fourth in Class 5A, will host top-ranked Deshler, which is favored by many to win the 4A title this season.
And don't forget about Red Bay, which is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A after a historic 13-1 campaign last season. The Tigers have taken on the challenge of playing Class 5A Lee-Huntsville on the road at Milton Frank Stadium at 7 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to the action on the field, fans will get to watch the spirited routines performed by the varsity cheerleading squads and the rousing halftime shows put together by the marching bands.
Friday night football is special because of the way it brings people together. Even if you don't have a child participating in the band, cheerleading squad or football team, help support your community by cheering on a local team this weekend.
