RED BAY – Sometimes success can be your enemy especially when it comes to scheduling non-region opponents in high school football.
Red Bay is a prime example.
"It was hard to get a game because of last year," Red Bay coach Dale Jeffreys said.
So instead of opening the season against a similar sized school, the Class 2A Tigers will travel to Huntsville Saturday night to play Class 5A Lee-Huntsville at Milton-Frank Stadium.
Jeffreys said he could have scheduled a smaller school, but he thought his team would benefit more from the Lee game.
"It will be a big-game atmosphere which will help prepare the team for the playoffs and some regular season games," Jeffreys said.
While Lee is a larger school, they dress about the same number of players as Red Bay. The only difference is Red Bay will have a greater number of younger players.
He said the Generals were down last year (2-8) but they should be strong this season, which should help the Tigers as the year progresses.
"We want to be the best we can be," Jeffreys said.
