VINA – Morgan McCarley grabbed a pair of touchdown passes from Brent Townsend for Vina, but it was not enough as Hackleburg defeated the Red Devils 33-22.
Vina led 14-13 at halftime. The second team and the junior high team played the second half.
"I was pleased with the run game," Vina coach Bill Smith said. "Overall, the offense was not what I wanted it to be, but we will work on that."
Channing Haithcock led the rushing attack with a touchdown.
Smith said the defense was shaky at the start, but settled in as the game progressed. He was most pleased with the play of his linebacking corps.
"Cody Poores, Blake Darracott and Matthew Hester played well tonight," Smith said.
Despite the loss, Smith said he was happy with where his team is at.
"I feel good about what we've done," Smith said. "They still have some work to do, but they'll get it done."
Vina hosts Shoals Christian Friday.
