RUSSELLVILLE – The Russellville football team proved it could play with the big boys Friday as the Golden Tigers defeated two Class 6A schools in their fall jamboree.
Russellville opened with a 21-14 victory over Northridge. The teams scored two touchdowns each in the first quarter, but the Russellville defense tightened in the second quarter.
The Northridge quarterbacks remained under constant pressure and the Jaguars could not find a rhythm on offense.
"I thought they got after it on defense," Russellville coach Doug Goodwin said.
The Russellville offense also struggled early in the second quarter before sophomore Brent Calloway broke free on a long run to put the Golden Tigers ahead for good.
"He is going to be a good player," Goodwin said. "He still has a lot to learn, but he wants to learn it."
No stats were kept for the game, but Goodwin said Scotty Freeman scored on a 2-yard run and Nathan McAlister scored on a play of about 64 yards.
In the second game, Bob Jones scored a late touchdown but missed the extra point to take a 20-14 lead. Russellville answered with a touchdown drive and an extra point to pull out the 21-20 victory.
Russellville will host Deshler Friday in its regular season opener.
