Cub Scouts hold annual boat race

The excitement in their faces was clear when the boys gathered at the First United Methodist Church of Russellville to race their homemade boats in Cub Scout Pack #39's annual Rain gutter Regatta.
Cubmaster Elliott Gordon said each boy made his own boat, with the help of a kit. The kit gave the boys a basic boat, and it was up to them to customize the design by choosing the paint, and other options for the boat.
"This is something we do every year," Gordon said. "They make the boats and we race them."
The race was a double elimination tournament, meaning each boy had to lose a race twice in order to eliminated from the competition. The boys had to blow the boat down a rain gutter and the first one to reach the end of the gutter wins that race.
The winners of the race are Charlie Gordon, first place; Austin Stidham, second place; Hunter Campbell, third place; and Cody Hopson, fourth place.
In addition to the race winners, other awards were presented during the Regatta.
Best in show went to Theron Pounders. Best-named boat was given to Logan Forsythe. Hunter Campbell won most original design, and Austin Stidham took home the best paint job award. Jarrod Lassiter won the most creative award. Logan Forsythe was named safest boater, and the best craftsmanship award was given to Charlie Gordon.
The rain gutter regatta is one of the many activities for the boys of Pack # 39.
Pack 39 will hold its annual Back to School Night on Thursday August 28 at First Methodist Church in downtown Russellville. The event will start at 6:30pm.
Registration is open to all boys from 1st grade to 5th grade. Pack 39 is one of the oldest Cub Scout Packs in North Alabama. Pack 39 is a member of the Greater Alabama Council and is charter by First Methodist Church in Russellville. Pack 39 will be celebrating its 46th year this year.
