Russellville is one step closer to moving to the vacant lot across from the downtown post office after Monday night's city council meeting.
Council members unanimously approved a $762,000 bid from Hovater's Metal Works in Russellville to construct the new city hall building.
"We ask that (Hovater's) buy their materials in Russellville, if at all possible," said District 3 councilman Burns "Buckshot" Saint. "They aren't required to do that but we want them to at least give local businesses a chance to bid."
The council also accepted a bid on the project to expand the city tennis courts while rejecting one for renovations to the existing facility.
Talbot Tennis and Roswell Fence of Atlanta submitted a winning bid of $162,888 for the first contract, while a $196,000 bid with a deductive alternate of $4,000 from David Acton Building Corp. was rejected for the second contract, which will be re-opened for bids and includes work on a pagoda, walks and landscaping at the tennis facility.
The meeting, which lasted just over an hour, went into an executive session for 45 minutes to discuss the good name and character of city employees, according to city attorney Jeff Bowling.
