Growing too fast

By Staff
Jonathan Willis
It is amazing how fast time flies by.
You hear that old saying often, but there are other times when it really seems true.
I was speaking with the class president from our graduating class Tuesday. He is busy working on planning our 10-year high school reunion.
It seems like just yesterday that we were walking across the stage at Russellville High School getting our diplomas and a pat on the back as we entered the real world.
As we talked, we recalled the first days that we were both in Tuscaloosa getting ready for college and, of course, going to college football games.
It seems like no time ago that we were loading in cars leaving for Gainesville to see Alabama beat Florida in one of the best football games I've ever seen or going to Atlanta to watch the Tide beat that same team just two months later.
The memories of high school and college are still so clear that it seems like we should just be getting back from that long car trip. But that's been nine years ago now.
It's funny how quickly time passes by, especially when you have a child of your own.
I don't know how many times I've heard, "he will be grown before you know it" or "he will be starting school before long."
I didn't realize how true all of that was.
Our little boy, Ty, is already 14 months old and walking everywhere he can.
He is getting his own little personality and it's fun to watch.
He even told me "no" for the first time Sunday night when we were getting him ready for church.
I said "come on, let's get ready for church," and he said "no," shook his head and ran away.
There was no way I could be mad at him, but I am sure that won't be so cute down the road.
But right now, I just want to take in everything he does because those wise words I heard so much will become true.
He will be grown before I know it and walking to get his own diploma or going to Alabama games with his own friends.
At least it better be Alabama games he's going to.
