Williams hired as assistant superintendent

The Franklin County board of education didn't have to look far to find the system's new assistant superintendent.
The board voted to hire long-time coach and former Phil Campbell High School assistant principal Gary Williams to fill the position at Thursday evening's regular board meeting.
Williams has been working as an administrative assistant to superintendent Bill Moss for the past three years and says that he is ready for his new role.
Moss said that he feels comfortable with the decision to hire Williams, but it was a tough decision due to the quality of applicants who applied for the job.
When Williams began his job as administrative assistant three years ago, he said that his job detail included five things.
Williams said that there are several capital project plans scheduled for the next year that should keep him busy.
Moss said that it was important to have someone in place when he was out of town or out of the office and Williams' hiring should be a big help.
In other business, the board accepted Michael Beck's resignation as head girls basketball coach at Phil Campbell. Beck will remain with the school as a teacher and head baseball coach.
The board also appointed Greg Hamilton as the new assistant principal at Vina High School.
