Council discusses fee increases

The Red Bay city council voted Monday night to set up a meeting with the city's water and gas board to discuss rising costs of sewer and garbage fees.
According to councilwoman Ann Wilkins, the water and gas board will begin charging a 10 percent fee to city services effective March 1. The board is also going to charge the city half of the salary for several employees who work for both the city and the water and gas department.
Wilkins said that the water and gas board did not discuss the fees with the city council, but Bobby Nelson, who serves on both the city council and water and gas board, said that he knew what the charges stemmed from.
Nelson also said that the salaries that the city will be responsible for paying will be for employees who currently work for the city.
In other business, the council tabled a motion to adopt a new drug ordinance until members of the board could read it further.
The council agreed that it appears to be a good policy but that they needed more time to read through it.
Mayor Tommy Nelson was not present at the meeting due to his health.
Nelson began taking cancer treatments last week and was ill at the time of the council meeting. The council's next meeting will be March 7.
