Union is Recognized as Top Community

By Staff
The Union Agricultural Community Club has won first place in the Franklin County community improvement contest and will represent Franklin County in the state contest.
The officers of the club are Elmer Davis, president, T.W. Morgan, vice-president; and Fletcher Sission, secretary-treasury.
These officers will go to Birmingham on December 13 and be the honored guests of the Liberty National Life Insurance Company.
Christmas Lighting to Begin on Friday
The merriness of the Christmas season will be emblazoned upon Russellville streets Dec. 10 in conjunction with the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet.
Gene Weatherby, city electric department manager, said the city's new lights will be completely installed and ready for action at that time.
The Chamber of Commerce and City Council recently purchased new Christmas lighting for the city after new whiteway lights installed last summer relegated the old decorations to obsolescence.
Lights also have been erected in Phil Campbell and Red Bay, the former for the first time in its history.
Vote on Cotton Quota to Be Held on Tuesday
Tuesday, Dec. 14, is the day cotton growers will decide whether marketing quotas will continue in effect on the 1955 cotton crop.
R.W. Taylor, chairman of Franklin County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, reminded farmers this week.
All farmers who grew upland cotton in 1954 will be eligible to vote in the upland cotton referendum.
Old Toys Ring the Bell for a Fire Engine Ride
A bunch of enthusiastic kids rode the fire engine last Saturday, and Fire Chief Lee Creekmore is hoping to give rides to a lot more this week.
How can YOU get on that fire engine? It isn't a bit hard. Just root around in the back of your closet, or the bottom of your toy box and haul out those toys you haven't played with for a coon's age.
If they are broken or a little shabby, don't worry about it.
Chief Creekmore's volunteer firemen are going to be volunteer toymakers and fix up your old things so they'll look like new to some boy or girl who wouldn't have a very merry Christmas if it weren't for YOU.
