Lauderdale County property taxes would jump 6.92 percent under a proposed $41.9 million annual budget for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.
The tax increase would generate about $1.2 million. The money would help fund the proposed $41.9 million budget an amount that includes about $7 million in cash reserves.
Lauderdale County is currently operating under a budget of $37.2 million, including about $6 million in cash reserves. County supervisors are expected to approve a new budget this month.
If the tax increase is approved, county residents will pay more in taxes on their homes, rental property, car tags, and business fixtures and equipment.
The property taxes would generate about 45.92 percent of the total budget, or $19.2 million, according to Tony Green, Lauderdale County administrator.
County supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget and tax increase at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the board room of the Raymond P. Davis Annex Building at 410 Constitution Ave.
Anyone who wants to attend the public hearing on the proposed budget and tax increase will have a chance to speak the meeting.
