BUTLER, Ala. John Pascley ran for more than 100 yards and scored three touchdowns, and Brandon McGhee added another score on Friday as Southern Choctaw High School won its season opener 30-6 over in-county rival Choctaw County High School.
Southern Choctaw's defense nearly came away with a shutout, as Choctaw County's lone touchdown came in the final minute of the game.
The Indians set the tone for their aggressive game plan early, recovering a short kickoff and scoring three plays later on a 27-yard touchdown run from Pascley. With the two-point conversion that followed, the eight-point lead was all Southern Choctaw needed.
Choctaw County's defense stifled its opponent as well, disrupting Southern Choctaw's running game and holding the Indians scoreless for the rest of the half. Southern Choctaw nearly completed a long scoring pass late in the second quarter, but Tigers defender J.R. Deloach picked the ball off for an interception on the Choctaw County 1-yard line.
The Tigers appeared to tie the game late in the first half, when Kendarius Williams picked up a loose ball on a punt and streaked into the end zone. But referees ruled the play a muff, and Choctaw County did not score before time ran out.
Southern Choctaw quarterback McGhee gave his team its second touchdown of the night and a 14-0 lead four minutes into the third quarter on a short quarterback keeper.
Choctaw County drove into Indians territory early in the fourth quarter, converting a fourth down before stalling on the Southern Choctaw 30-yard line. On fourth and 13, Pascley scooped up a fumble on a quarterback sack and ran 70 yards for his second touchdown with 9:24 left in the game.
Pascley's third score came three and a half minutes later on a 60-yard touchdown run that gave the Indians a 30-0 lead.
Choctaw County avoided a shutout on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 42 seconds left.
Still, the near shutout wasn't all good news for Boykin.
Yardage totals were unavailable for both teams.
