When it comes to area golf tournaments, never, ever count out the team of Judge Little and Scott Morgan until the final hole is played.
Little and Morgan fired a 13-under par 58 Sunday morning to take the lead in the second round of the Ed Lewis Memorial Day Tournament at Northwood Country Club. After 36 holes, Little and Morgan are 17 strokes under par at 125.
Sunday's round was played with a best-ball format and Little and Morgan took advantage to take a one-stroke lead over first-round leaders David Ray and Alex Weddington, who shot a 9-under 62 and are tied for second place at 126 with the team of Ed Brown and Chuck Gordon.
Brown and Gordon had the day's second-best round Sunday as they shot a 12-under 59.
Little and Morgan started on No. 3 and quickly posted birdies on Nos. 4, 5, and 6. After a pair of pars, they birdied Nos. 9, 10, and 11 before putting an eagle-3 on their card on No. 12. They also had birdies on Nos. 14, 15, 16, 18, and 1.
Brown and Gordon began their day on No. 4 and birdied five of their first six holes. They also had birdies on Nos. 12, 14, 18, 1, and 3 to go with an eagle-3 on No. 16.
First-round leaders Ray and Weddington started on No. 1 and used a string of five consecutive birdies on the back nine in their 62. On the front nine, they birdied Nos. 4, 8, and 9. After parring Nos. 10 and 11, they reeled off birdies on Nos. 12-16 and closed with a birdie on No. 18.
Joel Nelson and Steve Nelson shot an 11-under 60 Sunday and are in fourth place overall with a 129. In their second round, they started on No. 6 and did so with a bang as they put an eagle-3 on their scorecard. They went on to record birdies on Nos. 9, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 1, 3, and 5.
Tied for fifth at 130 are the teams of David Calhoun-Scott Chesser and Earl Aycock-Randy Pool.
Calhoun and Chesser started on No. 2 Sunday and birdied Nos. 4, 5, and 6 before parring the next seven holes. They birdied Nos. 14, 16, and 1 to finish with a 65.
Aycock and Pool began play on No. 1 and parred their first five holes before getting a birdie on No. 6. They also birdied Nos. 9, 12, 13, 14, and 16.
In a three-way tie at 131 are the teams of Billy McWilliams-Bilbo Mitchell, Doyle Bryan-Bubba Hampton, and Jimbo Green-John Rea. Green and Rea shot a 64 Sunday. McWilliams and Mitchell and Bryan and Hampton each shot 65 in the second round.
Defending champions Jimmy Carle and Johnny Dement enter today's final round eight strokes off the lead after Sunday's 65 left them at 133 for the tournament. Starting their round on No. 6, they promptly took a bogey before getting birdies on Nos. 9 and 10. They also had birdies on Nos. 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18.
Closing out the championship flight are Ben McLeod and Chuck Rea at 133 and Ferrell Fort and Andy Lucovich at 139.
