Winter season ends, summer leagues start up this week

Action continues to wind down in the 2003-04 Fall &Winter season. The final bell will be rung Thursday night when the Queen City league holds its season-ending championship roll-off. This past week, we saw the conclusion of the Senior Citizens league, the Bowlerettes league and the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Top dog in the Senior Citizens were "The Cats," with team members Betty Williams, Boyd Williams, Bobby Dearing and Cletis McCarra. In the Bowlerettes league, Virginia Bates, Glenda Thornton, Louise Braxton and Carol Workman joined forces on the Philadelphia Securities Insurance team to capture the crown. The Wednesday Night Mixed title was claimed by "Sam's Girls," featuring Denise Rutledge, Sam Roberts, Judy Bounds and Rodney Bounds, who finished out the season following an ankle injury to regular member Debbie Jones. By the time you read this, the Ball &Chain league will also have completed its season and I will have the results for you next week.
With limited action in the leagues last week, some folks still found a way to capture twinkling star with some fine performances. Tyrone McAlpine claimed his seventh career 300 game while bowling in the Ball &Chain league. Tim Edmonds latched on to a 279, and Rodney Bounds laid claim to the high series with a 277/724 effort. Jerry Butts notched his first career 600 series with a 601, while Johnny Pollock, Jeff Gaines, Don Waldron and Albert Edmonds all pounded out games in the 260-plus range. Barry Woods garnered his 12th 700 of the year with a 706. It looks like Mike Cothern will come up just short in his quest to break Johnnie Blackmon's record 36 700s. But I think 33 in one season is still a pretty good accomplishment. Keep trying, Mike. There's always next year.
Summer league action gets underway this week with bowlers in the Random league taking to the lanes. This unique format allows the two-person teams to bowl anytime during the week. The remainder of the summer schedule kicks off next Monday. Openings for teams and individuals are still available in the Senior Citizens, Adult-Junior, Tuesday Summer Mixed, Trio and the Friday Night Mixed leagues. Don't forget the No-Tap tournament the first and third Wednesday of each month and the weekly 4-game Scratch Sweeper on Monday Nights.
We are also exploring the possibilities of having a junior program during the summer. We are setting up Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. as possible times. If you have any youngsters that might be interested contact Dixie Bowl as soon as possible. We need to know if there is enough interest to host a junior program during the summer. Expected start dates are Wednesday, June 2 and Sunday, June 6.
