Nine girls, ages 9-17, will be introduced to the Christian community tonight during a Debutantes for Christ Pageant.
Sponsored by the Mission Ministry of West Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, the program will begin at 6 p.m. at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2530 Old Highway 45 North.
According to Sylvia L. Hopkins, a coordinator, the pageant has a two-fold purpose.
The pageant is also a major fund-raising project of the church. Proceeds will go toward West Mount Moriah's building fund, Hopkins said.
In preparing for the event, debutantes were required to participate in several activities, including attending workshops on public speaking, etiquette and make-up conducted by Charlette Trotter; volunteering at South Harbor Shelter; and attending a Meet &Greet reception.
During the program, the girls will perform a talent and answer an impromptu question.
The 2004 Debutantes for Christ are Ashley Betts, Grace Baptist Church; Monica Brown, Okatibbee Baptist Church; Amber Jenkins, St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Meridian; Alison Johnson, West Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church; Simone Johnson, Sunlight Baptist Church; Ericka Lewis, Fifth Street Missionary Baptist Church; Alishia Moore, West Mt. Missionary Baptist Church; Jalisa Pace, New Prospect Baptist Church; and Brittaney Rue, West Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.
