Meridian High and West Lauderdale took to the tennis court on Thursday afternoon in a key non-divisonal showdown that saw the Wildcats only lose one match.
In boys singles action, Scott Truesdale defeated Kyle Dew 6-2, 6-1, and Anna Allread got a singles win for the Lady Wildcats by defeating Lea Cooke 6-3, 6-1. In boys doubles action, Graham Woods and Will Compton of Meridian High took a win over Josh Sonak and Clayton Keller 6-1, 6-2.
In girls doubles play, Kortney Harris and Kelly Sterling defeated Casey Hedgepatch and Nancy Siefker 6-0, 6-0, and in mixed play, Hannah Ford and Nathan Kittrell defeated Brook Bounds and Matt Schanrock 6-1, 6-4 to give Meridian a sweep of the doubles matches.
PREP BASEBALL
Copiah 4
Lamar 3
The Raiders lost a heartbreaker on the road at Copiah Academy on Thursday evening to drop their record to 2-4 for the season. Lamar surrendered the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Drew Moffett took the no decision for Lamar, tossing six innings and collecting six strikeouts, and Nathan Harrison took the loss in relief to drop his record to 0-1.
Kemp Mosley led the Raiders with a 3-for-3 night with a double, and Moffett added a single and double. Lamar returns to action today at home against Copiah Academy in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
Enterprise 6
Raleigh 2
The Bulldogs used several extra base hits to improved to 7-2 for the season, with a four-run win at home over Raleigh on Thursday.
Scott Mosley led the way with a single and home run, and Wade Weathers had three singles and a double for the Bulldogs. Lance Irby had two singles and a double for Enterprise, and Dennis Watson hit a double.
Zeb Swain took the pitching win for Enterprise and moved his record to 1-0 for the year. Enterprise returns to action at home today against Clarkdale.
PREP SOFTBALL
West Lauderdale 12
Raleigh 2
The Lady Knights pounded out 13 hits in a run-rule win over Raleigh Thursday night at home. Haley Campbell led the way at the plate for West Lauderdale by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Morgan Gullett went 3-for-4 with three singles for the Lady Knights, and Jessica Vick collected a pair of hits to go along with an RBI. Kirby Rutledge got the win on the mound, pitching six strong innings and allowing one earned run on six strikeouts.
West Lauderdale returns to action today at 5 p.m. against Enterprise.
Newton County 7
Southeast 4
Lorna Blackburn added a double for Newton County, and Joy Cavenaugh picked up the pitching win for the Lady Cougars.
Jessica Rose led Southeast with a 3-for-3 night, and Lindsey Raines added a double in the loss for the Lady Tigers.
Newton County returns to action today at Carthage and Southeast will pay a visit to Quitman.
Union 16
Puckett 0
Union (3-1) opened district play on the right note by taking a very convincing win over Puckett heading into a pair of big non-divisional games against Northeast Lauderdale and West Lauderdale this weekend.
The Lady Yellowjackets will meet Northeast on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by West Lauderdale.
Union had 11 hits in the game, and Tiffany Thomas led the way with a single and triple. Morgan Breland had a pair of singles. Paige Holsen had one single and two RBIs in the win.
Lindsey Walker took the win by tossing a no-hitter in five innings of work to go along with 11 strikeouts.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Mississippi College 8,
Judson College 2
Mississippi College 9,
Judson College 1
The Lady Choctaws moved to 10-2 for the season with a pair of home wins on Thursday over Judson College.
In game one, Mississippi College used a four-run second inning to take the six-run win. In game two, the Lady Choctaws got another solid pitching performance and this time Carly Buckley took center stage. Buckley went five innings and only allowed one earned run to go along with six strikeouts. Wendy McMillan led the offense with three RBIs on a double and Chapman added two singles in the win.
JUCO TENNIS
The Meridian Community College tennis team improved to 7-3 overall with a pair of wins on the road at Jones Junior College in divisional play on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles took a solid sweep of the doubles action, but dropped three singles matches to the Lady Bobcats.
Jillian Foster and Amy Cole defeated Jordan Ladmen and Darlene Cassell 8-6, while Amy Frazier and Britley Kimbrell took a 9-8 (5) win over Ashley Hughes and Connie Clark. Melissa Kimbrell and Michelle Clearman defeated Laura Rutherford and Laura Kittenhouse 8-5 to take the clean sweep.
Cole defeated Ladmen 6-2, 6-2, and Frazier defeated Hughes 6-4, 6-2 to give MCC a pair of singles wins. Brittley Kimbrell also took a win over Connie Clark 6-0, 6-3.
The men's teams had no troubles in taking a 9-0 win over Jones. Mylan Anderson led the way with a singles win over Josh Stacher 6-1, 6-0, and Tyler Marroy also took a singles win over Brooks Buffington by a final of 4-6, 6-2 (11).
MCC took a clean sweep in the doubles matches highlighted by an 8-1 win by Anderson and Jay Merritt.
MCC also recorded a win in women's action on Wednesday afternoon over Copiah-Lincoln. Jillian Foster and Amy Cole picked up a doubles win 9-8 (5), and Amy Frazier and Brittley Kimbrell also took an 8-1 doubles win.
Cole took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sadie Corban and Frazier took a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mary McCombs to highlight a pair of the singles victories for MCC.
PREP GOLF
West Lauderdale 154
Meridian 171
The Knights picked up a win over Meridian High in local prep golf action on Thursday afternoon. Jarrod Moulds was individual first place honors with a low round score of 36.
Shane Parker totaled a score of 38 for the Knights, L.J. Robinson scored a 39, and Ross McWilliams ended the event with a score of 41.
PREP TRACK
Meridian High took its first track win of the year on Thursday afternoon by accumulating a team score of 120 points. Northeast Lauderdale finished second with a team score of 53 and Newton High took third place with 26 points. Clarkdale ended the day in fourth with 11 points.
