City tournaments were a success

The final weekend of action in the Men's and Ladies' City Tournaments featured plenty of high scores and action on both ends of the house. Shirley Gaines led the ladies in singles with a huge 699 series which also featured the high game for the ladies with a 247. Terrie Scott cranked out her highest game ever with a 220, which was just a few pins short of earning her the Century Award. Cathy Jones was queen of the hill by capturing the all-events handicap and scratch titles. Paula Wooten and Mary Wicker claimed the doubles championship. The Kewanee One Stop team made a splash in the final shift to wrestle the Team championship for the Dixie Queens.
The guys were full of vim and vigor. Jim Broderick, Jr. blasted the tournament's second 300 game but Tim Van Doren was not to be upstaged. So he got busy and buried 12 straight for the second time in a week to help himself to the All Events Scratch title. All Events Handicap, Singles and Doubles were all claimed by the red hot Leslie McClinton who used a 267 game while bowling with Doubles partner Johnny Tinsley and a 268 game to blow away all competitors in singles. The team title went to Ronnie's Gang, followed by Mr. Discount No. 3 and Boyette's Fish Camp.
The Meridian Women's Bowling Association Annual Meeting has been scheduled for March 28 at the Scottish Rites Building at 2301 11th St. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and will include association business, the election of officers for the coming year and the distribution of city tournament prize money. The ladies would like to thank all those who participated in the Bowl for the Cure fund raiser during February. Thanks to the men and women of the Meridian Bowling community, our local association was able to donate $1423 to help fight breast cancer.
League action was also hot and heavy over the past week. Six guys were able to crack the 700 barrier led by Marty McMullen's 762 on Wednesday night. James Tierney strung strikes to claim his first career "7" with a 717. Other guys making the grade included newcomer to the area K.J. Humphries, Jeff Gaines and Mike Cothern. On the ladies side, Judy Bounds stood "tall" with a big 267 game and a 641 series to pave the way for others. Mona McGrane has been bowling well lately and continued her winning ways with a 233/624 effort and Nita Fike stepped to the plate and blasted out a 223/602. Robin Davis dialed her way to a nice 227 game while Diane Gable and Matar McClinton (can't let Leslie have all the glory) each scattered pins for games of 224. Lisa Rickles rounded out the leader board with a nice 222.
The Wednesday Fun Time Junior league had completed its season. Thanks to all the bowlers and their parents for making this a successful season. The Saturday Morning juniors will conclude their season in a couple of weeks.
I have run out of space for the week so I will try to get caught up next week on third-round winners in the various leagues. Until next wee, good luck and good bowling.
