Excellence in Education

Vicki Arrington and Paul Goble will receive the Marshall and Miriam Deonier Memorial scholarships at Meridian Community College.
These $800 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation. Virginia Stevens, Thomas Roberson and the grandchildren of the Deoniers established this endowment.
Arrington is a 1974 graduate of Quitman High School. After losing her job due to a plant closing, she decided to return to school and enter the Horticulture Technology Program.
She serves as vice president of the Horticulture Club and works part time for the program coordinator, Gail Barton. She plans to possibly go into business for herself.
Goble is a 2002 home school graduate.
A sophomore in the University Transfer Program studying religion, he plans to attend seminary after attaining his bachelor's degree. Goble serves as youth minister at his church.
He is a member of the Baptist Student Union, the MCC chorus and the BSU Praise Band.
Wilson Khalmus of Meridian and Daniel Rigdon of Collinsville will receive the Marilyn Hampton Scholarships at Meridian Community College.
Wanda McPhail and Bubba Hampton fund these awards through the MCC Foundation.
Kahlmus is a 2003 graduate of Lamar School, where he was a member of the tennis and the soccer teams. He is a freshman in the University Transfer Program and plays tennis for the MCC Eagles.
Rigdon is a 2002 graduate of West Lauderdale High School. He is a sophomore in the University Transfer Program.
A dean's list scholar, he is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students. He is a member of the MCC Chorus and the tennis team.
More than 160 students were recently inducted into Mississippi State University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi the nation's leading higher education honor society.
Phi Kappa Phi membership is open to juniors and seniors at the top of their class in all majors.
New members include Hayden C. Amis of Decatur; Emily Ann Farley, Jennifer A. Hermetz, Charles R. Pryor, Kimberly K. Rogers and William B. Rutledge, all of Meridian; David S. Therrien of Newton; and Katherine R. Wright of Quitman.
