City championships to conclude

By By Mike Carson / bowling columnist
Feb. 24, 2004
The annual city championships are about to conclude for both the men and women. Bowlers are again urged to double check the schedules posted at Dixie Bowl so that you know what times you are scheduled to bowl. Remember that check-in is 30 minutes prior to each shift. Please make every effort to be at the lanes on time.
Men, you may still enter any event but all late entries are subject to lane availability. Since we are running two tournaments at the same time, some of this weekend's shifts are already full or near full so you would be best served not waiting until the last minute to try to enter. Shift times are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day.
Local YABA President Jeff Gaines would like to send his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in the recent No-Tap tournament to benefit the YABA Scholarship Fund. The turnout was far greater than anticipated with 113 bowlers taking part in the two shifts. Thanks to you $1,130 was added to the scholarship fund for our future bowlers. He would also like to thank all those who worked so hard to make the tournament a success, especially those individuals and businesses who contributed the 83 door prizes that were distributed. The tournament featured five "300 games" including two each by Chuck Gray and Steve Eastman. Tyrone McAlpine contributed the other "perfect game." Congratulations go out to all the winners.
The ladies were led by Sue Kirkpatrick followed by Lisa Barfield, Denise Rutledge, Mona McGrane and Gina Robertson. Chuck Gray put on a display for the men when, after opening the first frame with a split, strung 35 strikes in a row to finish with a 278, 300, 300/878. Only a few of those strikes were "no-taps" and the first 300 was all natural strikes. He was followed by Steve Eastman, Tyrone McAlpine, C.O. Gray and Arthur Dearman.
In local league action, Bill Fike and Robby Relinski tied for the high game with a 279 with Bill recording a 723 and Robby checking in with a 708. M.A. Copeland captured the high series with a 732. Also making their marks were Jim Broderick, Jr. with a 717, Leon Fike and Tim Van Doren at 708 and Don Waldron who came in with a 700 on the nose. Mike Cothern punched out a 276 while Greg Taylor and Robert Brown each chalked up games of 267. Congratulations to senior bowlers Havard Wall, whose 204 topped his average by 50 pins and to Raymond Crawford who fired a nice 262 game to grab the coveted Century Award.
Matar McClinton showed the ladies who's who with a nice 236/612 set while Marlene Stokes fired strikes to record the high game of the week with a 242. Shelia Dearman checked in with a 233, Sue Kirkpatrick roared with a 224 and Debbie Jones scattered pins for a 222.
On the junior circuit, Tyler Davis held his head high after a nice 249 game, while Adam Carson used a 224 to produce the high series for the younger set with a 550. Albert Edmonds reeled off games of 205 and 208 while carding a 545. Josh Coleman pounded out a 200 and a 205. Curtis Woods turned in a nice 203/544 effort. Amanda Rickles led the girls with a 164 game and Randi Allen turned in the high series with a 429. The Prep bowlers were led by Jerry Dearman (171/425) and Emily Davis (166/429).
That's all for this week. Until next week. . . Good luck and good bowling!
