Heidelberg, Bay Springs to meet in 7-2A finals

ENTERPRISE It took Heidelberg High School some time to get rolling, but the Oilers finally got going to beat Taylorsville in boys' semifinal action at the Region 7-2A tournament in Enterprise.
Heidelberg slowly stretched out a lead and then slammed the door in a 61-39 victory.
In other action, the Heidelberg girls beat Bassfield 57-34, the Bay Springs boys beat Bassfield 69-59, and the Bay Springs girls beat Taylorsville 52-33.
In today's games, Taylorsville and Bassfield will play in the girls' consolation game at 4 p.m., followed by Bassfield and Taylorsville in the boys' consolation game at 5:30 p.m. Heidelberg and Bay Springs will play in both the girls' and boys' championship game. The girls will tipoff at 7 p.m. followed by the boys at 8:30.
On Friday night, Heidelberg continued to roll despite its recent week-long break.
"We didn't execute well," said Heidelberg coach Ted Williams. "We've had these week-long layoffs. It's kind of catching up with us. Practice just isn't enough. Hopefully tomorrow night we won't be so rusty and we will be ready to play against a very a good Bay Springs team."
The Oilers jumped out to a 9-7 lead after the first quarter. After the two teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter, Heidelberg closed out the quarter with a 8-0 run to take a 29-18 lead at halftime.
The Oilers put together a 10-2 run in the third quarter, but led just 42-31 at the end of the quarter.
Heidelberg put the game away in the final quarter with a 17-2 run. A big dunk by Andre Stephens with a minute left put an exclamation point on the win.
Jordan Payne led the Oilers with 30 points, while Stephens added 14. Douglas Keyes led Taylorsville with 12 points and Richard Moffett added 10.
Heidelberg (girls) 57
Bassfield 34
Heidelberg jumped out to a 14-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 57-34 victory over Bassfield.
The Lady Oilers led 30-11 at halftime and outscored Bassfield 14-8 in the third quarter to take a 44-19 lead into the final quarter.
Shawana Stevens scored 17 points for Heidelberg in the win and April Baker scored 13.
Bay Springs (girls) 52
Taylorsville 33
Bay Springs used a big second quarter to blow past Taylorsville in girls' semifinal action.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Lady Tartars 21-5 in the second quarter to build a 22 point lead.
Bay Springs led 44-28 at the end of the third quarter and rolled to the 52-33 victory. Nadosha Strickland led Bay Springs with 17 points and Kristi Martins scored eight.
Bay Springs (boys) 69
Bassfield 59
Bay Springs held off Bassfield to take a 69-59 win to advance to the championship game of the Region 7-2A tournament.
The Bulldogs stretched out to a 50-41 lead at the end of the third quarter and held on for the victory.
Reggie Shellwood scored 22 points to pace the Bulldogs. Labarton Jones added 15 points and Phillips Sims scored 10.
Marves Fairley scored 19 points for the Yellow Jackets. Jermaine Reese finished with 15 points and Marcus Pitts added 11.
