Lauderdale County Democrats to caucus on Saturday

By By Steve Gillespie / staff writer
Feb. 17, 2004
Lauderdale County Democrats plan to hold precinct caucuses at 10 a.m. Saturday and elect delegates to the county party convention in March.
Clark said someone should be at each voting precinct to open the buildings Saturday for the meetings. If precincts aren't open, she said, voters can still meet and choose a delegate to the county party convention.
The caucuses come in advance of the March 9 Democratic Party primary in which voters will cast ballots for who they want to be the party's presidential nominee in November.
The state Republican Party will not have a presidential primary this year because President George W. Bush is unopposed. Republicans in the 2nd and 4th Congressional Districts, however, will vote March 9 on a nominee to face incumbent Democrats in those two U.S. House races.
Lauderdale County will hold its Democratic convention at 10 a.m. March 13 in the Lauderdale County courthouse.
At that time, representatives from each of the county's precincts will convene and members will be elected to serve a four-year term on the Democratic Executive Committee.
The number of delegates the county will send to the party district meeting is not yet known. It will be determined based on the Democratic voter turnout in the last election.
At that meeting, Democrats will choose delegates to the party's state convention in Jackson on May 29. Then, at the state meeting, delegates will be chosen to attend the national party convention July 26-29 in Boston.
