Winston downs Heidelberg by one basket

HEIDELBERG The Heidelberg Rebels had one final opportunity in the closing seconds to complete one of the tournament's biggest comebacks, but that effort fell short, as the Winston Academy Patriots took a 58-57 win over the Rebels to take the tournament championship.
Winston Academy held a 34-24 lead at the end of the first half thanks to the perimeter shooting of Brandon Jennings to give the Patriots a 10-point halftime lead.
The Rebels cut the lead to 40-32, with 3:33 left in the third quarter, off a pair of baskets from Dusty Bass to bring Heidelberg back to within striking distance. The Rebels hit the final two shots of the third quarter to make the score 43-38 in favor of the Patriots. Heidelberg Academy went on an impressive 10-2 run to close out the third period which didn't last long in the fourth quarter.
The Rebels cut the lead to 54-49, with 1:23 left in the fourth, on a three-point play by Bass, and Heidelberg trimmed the lead to 56-54 moments later on yet another huge basket by Bass, with 46 seconds. The Patriots failed to convert free throws down the stretch, and Heidelberg received one last chance with five seconds left but the effort fell short, as the Patriots took the win.
Bass ended the night with a game-high 31 points for the Rebels, and Ryan Yawn added 10 points in the loss. Patrick Peterson led the way with a team-high 16 points for Winston Academy.

Kemper 44
The District 3-A Tournament championship game between the Heidelberg Academy Lady Rebels and the Kemper Academy Lady Rams came down to a simple game of momentum.
The Lady Rebels gained enough momentum in the final three minutes to take a 55-44 win over Kemper Academy to secure the divisional championship.
Courtney Thomas led the way with 19 points for Heidelberg Academy and Christie Thomas added 15 in the win. Beach led the way in the scoring department for the Lady Rams with 11 points.
Wayne (girls) 59
Winston 58
The Lady Jaguars held a 28-20 lead at halftime and held off a late surge by Winston Academy to take the consolation game with a one-point win.
Erin Wood led Wayne Academy with a game-high 25 points and Christen Palmer added 16 in the victory for Wayne Academy.
Hope Estes and Whitney Whiteside each led Winston Academy with 13 points apeice. Bridgette Prisock also added 12 points in the fourth place finish for the Lady Patriots.

Newton 39
Wayne Academy had its shooting troubles early, but fought off the struggles to take the third place finish in the tournament. The Jaguars led 19-14 at the end of the first half and went on an 8-0 run to open the third quarter and Newton County Academy could not overcome the deficit as the Jaguars rolled to the win.
Patton Stanley led the way with a game-high 24 points for Wayne Academy and Garet James added 16 in the win.
