A record number of high school juniors are in rehearsals for the upcoming local Meridian/Lauderdale County Junior Miss Program.
Twenty nine girls 19 from the county and 10 from the city have been practicing their physical fitness and interview skills at regular weekend rehearsal sessions since January.
Susan Leathers, chairman of the Meridian/Lauderdale County Junior Miss Program and president of the Meridian/Lauderdale County Junior Miss Association, said contestants are competing for the title of 2005 Junior Miss, $2,900 in cash scholarships and several thousand dollars more in scholarships to Mississippi universities and junior colleges.
The program is set March 19-20 at Meridian's Temple Theatre.
