Academy tourney heats up

HEIDELBERG There were no surprises in the Academy 3-A Tournament semifinals Friday night at Heidelberg Academy.
In the boys' championship tonight, top-seeded Winston Academy squares off with second-seeded Heidelberg Academy. In the girls' title game, top-seeded Heidelberg takes on second-seeded Kemper Academy.
Consolation games begin at 4 p.m. with the Wayne Academy Lady Jaguars facing Winston. The boys' consolation game has Newton County Academy taking on Wayne.
All of the teams will advance to the Central Region Tournament which begins Tuesday at Winston Academy in Louisville.

The Lady Rams had a battle on their hands in the day's opener, but used a late 9-0 run to improve to 20-7.
Kemper held a narrow 13-12 first quarter advantage only to have Wayne lead 21-20 at halftime.
The Lady Rams led 39-36 at the end of the third quarter, thanks to a last second 3-pointer from Libby Myers.
Wayne's Brittany Bunch promptly tied the game at 39 with a trey to open the fourth quarter.
The game was tied again at 41 and 43 before Wayne took its last lead at 44-43 on a free throw from Erin Wood with 2:47 remaining.
Kemper's Eve Darnell converted a three-point play on a layup and free throw to give the Lady Rams the lead for good and start the 9-0 run.
Leslie Beach hit a pair of free throws, Kayla Mosley scored from close range, and Darnell knocked down two more free throws as Kemper went up 52-44.
Kemper had four players score in double figures. Darnell had 15 points, Beach had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Mosley had 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Myers had 11 points and six rebounds.
Bunch, a sophomore, led Wayne, 10-15, with 19 points. Wood scored 13 and Fonda Cooley had 10.

The last game was a dandy as well. Heidelberg led 10-9 after one quarter and held a 27-26 halftime advantage. The Rebels were up 39-36 to start the fourth quarter.
Wayne promptly went up 41-39 with a 5-0 run. The Rebels responded with a game-winning 12-0 run with Ryan Yawn getting eight points in the run. He had 11 over the final 6:06 and 17 for the game.
Heidelberg, 20-6, also got 19 points from Will Thames and 14 from Dusty Bass. Thames hit four 3-point baskets.
Patton Stanley hit six treys to lead Wayne, 15-11, with 27 points. Garet James had 11 points.

The Lady Rebels scored the game's first seven points and led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. After going up 20-5 on an inside basket by Jennifer Barnett with 6:40 left in the first half, Heidelberg carried a 29-14 lead into intermission behind 16 points from Barnett.
Heidelberg led 39-18 to start the fourth quarter only to have Winston close to within 46-37 with 3:30 remaining. The Lady Rebels scored the next four points to end the comeback.
Barnett led Heidelberg, 19-6, with 18 points.
Heidelberg also got 13 points from Thomas and seven each from Katie Barnett and Meagan Masters.
Winston, 15-11, got 13 points from Hope Estes, nine from Anna Ward, and six from Whitney Whiteside.

The Patriots jumped out to a 22-4 first-quarter lead in whipping the Generals by 34 points.
Winston, 25-4, led 43-16 at halftime and was up 58-27 through three periods.
The Patriots got 16 points from Justin Eaves, 11 each from Taylor Paschal and Corey Hancock, 10 from Jon Duncan, and nine from Paul McMillin. Hancock hit three treys.
Newton, 6-21, got 11 points from Bo Dively and nine from Dustin McGowin.
