Sometimes the alarm clock goes off just a little too late. After trailing by 10 points at the half, Parklane Academy rallied to claim a 51-48 win over the Lamar Raiders on Saturday.
In earlier action, Parklane took a 63-41 win over the Lady Raiders. Lamar seemed to be in control of the game, as it took a 15-6 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, however, the Pioneers came out in a man-to-man defense that slowed Lamar down.
Lamar only scored seven points in the second quarter but still led 22-12.
In the third quarter, Parklane shifted into high gear as they scored 11 straight points. Wes Park hit a basket with 3:10 to go in half to put Parklane up 23-22.
Benton Turnage led Parklane with 22 points, and Park added 10.
The basket was the wakeup call Lamar had been waiting on, as Nathan Harrison scored the first points of the third quarter for the Raiders to put them back up 24-23.
After two more lead changes, Matthew Fort hit a three-pointer to put Lamar ahead for the rest of the quarter. Fort led the Raiders with 20 points in the game.
In the fourth quarter, Parklane took advantage of strong shooting from the free-throw line. The Pioneers hit 12-of-14 attempts in the quarter.
With six lead changes in the fourth quarter, the teams continued to battle it out.
With 2:40 to go in the game, Lamar went ahead 44-43 but failed to capitalize on a fast-break opportunity after a steal.
After missing the shot, Brandon Harrison fouled Parklane's Trey Hannah while going for a rebound.
The foul was pivotal because it was Harrison's fifth, forcing him to leave the game
Hannah hit the two free-throws and scored his only points in the game as Parklane took the final lead of the contest.
In the girls game, Parklane controlled the tempo from the first quarter.
The Lady Pioneers jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead early in the quarter and led 16-7 at the end of the first.
That pace continued into the second quarter as Parklane led 32-16. The Lady Pioneers were was led by Rebecca Brabham with 19 points, including five three-pointers.
Michelle Cochran added 16 points, and Erin Brabham scored 15.
Lamar was led by Cheryl Luquire with 11 points, and Lizie Williams added 10.
The Lady Raiders are now 8-11 overall and 0-3 in the region. Lamar will return to action on Monday when both teams cross the state line to play at South Choctaw (Ala.) Academy.
