MCC marks beginning
for more than 200 graduates

Like endless ribbons, lines wrapped the aisles and corridors at Northcrest Baptist Church on Saturday as Meridian Community College celebrated its annual fall commencement ceremony.
More than 200 black-robed candidates formed the line for the ceremony, the longest line in the history of the college, for fall commencement. The processional music provided by Carey Smith led into the invocation by Cynthia Ann Taylor. Meridian Fire Chief Tim Miller gave the commencement address to a crowd of more than 600 family members and friends of the graduates.
The word "commencement" comes from the Latin incepto meaning beginning, the name given the ceremony of initiation for new scholars into the fellowship of university teachers in medieval Europe, he said, noting that the event marked the inception of a new era in the lives of each of the graduates.
