Area bowlers roll in YABA tourney

The 41st Annual YABA City Tournament was held over the weekend with area youth competing for championship trophies in teams, doubles, singles and all-events. The bowlers were divided into categories by age. As usual, though, this is being written on Thursday and doesn't appear until today, so I hope to have a list of the winners for you next week.
Coming up this weekend is the final tournament of the year for the Stan's Classic 8-game Sweeper. Unlike the other tournaments, this weekend will feature bowling both on Saturday and Sunday. As this is written, less than twenty spots were still available for those who wish to take part. Extra prize money is being awarded in both handicap and scratch divisions and should make this the highest paying tournament of the year in series. Next week will be the final bowling week of 2003 for most leagues as we head into the Christmas break. Monday, Dec. 22 will be the final night of bowling before we take off for the holidays. All leagues will be off beginning Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, 2004. Competition will resume Friday, Jan. 2 when the Ball &Chain league returns to the lanes to kick off 2004. Many leagues will be closing out second-round competition in the next two weeks while others will reach the halfway point after the break.
There's not a lot of scores to report for last week due to the Thanksgiving break. The long weekend seemed to take its toll on bowlers when they returned Monday night as no one cracked the 700 barrier for the night. I guess we were all still suffering the effects of too much turkey and dressing. However, John Lott and and James Dillard did manage to crank out games of 278 while Don Waldron fired a 268. Only M.A. Copeland was able to break through the ice when he blasted a 752 set in the Wednesday Night Mixed league.
The ladies were led by Sharon Wade on Wednesday night who strutted her stuff with a 246 game and a nice 639 series. Denise Rutledge had a good night in the Bowlerettes league with a 223/615 performance. Mary Siegrist cranked out a 225 and Anna Moreno came in with a223. Congratulations to last week's Bowlerettes league Bowler of the Week June Thomas and previous week's winner Lisa Barfield. Also a pat on the back goes out to Becky Mitchell and Eleanor Culpepper, both of whom had games of 50 points or more over their average and to Norma Rose who topped her average by over 70 pins while bowling in the Senior Citizen's league.
Congratulations also go out to Caleb Pope and Stephen Walker who journeyed to Clinton over the Thanksgiving weekend and came home with the $1000 top prize in the Indian Lanes annual Turkey Day No-Tap tournament.
You will notice two sets of standings today for the Wednesday Night Mixed league. One set is the current standings while the other set was left over from the break. That's all for this week. Until next week. . . good luck and good bowling!
