Leake Academy blew open an otherwise close game against Lamar on Thursday with a 16-0, third-quarter run that helped the Rebels earn a 70-60 win against the Raiders.
Trailing 38-35 at halftime, Leake reeled off 16 unanswered points to begin the second half and held Lamar scoreless for most of the third quarter. Brannon Harrison broke the run for Lamar with a short layup nearly five minutes into the half, but by then the damage had been done.
Lamar started fast against the Rebels, jumping out to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter. The Raiders led 20-15 after David Haggard drove for a layup, was fouled and sank the free throw with eight seconds left in the quarter.
Leake claimed a 27-24 lead for the first time since the opening minutes on a three-pointer by Daniel Jones, but Lamar answered by reeling off eight straight points.
The Rebels held a 55-44 lead after three quarters, and though Lamar whittled Leake's advantage into single digits several times, the Raiders never seriously threatened.
Rebelettes 63
Lady Raiders 43
Kristin Caldwell had 16 points to lead the Leake Academy to a decisive 63-43 win over Lamar on Thursday.
Greggina Tadlock chipped in 13 points for the Rebelettes, and Caroline Dees came off the bench to add 11.
Lamar trailed by just six points with three minutes to go in the first quarter, but Leake went on an 11-2 run to end the period. Nine of those points came in the final minute and a half.
After falling behind 40-18 at halftime, the Lady Raiders outscored Leake 13-12 in the third quarter and 12-11 in the fourth.
Cheryl Luquire led Lamar with 12 points. Lizzie Williams also cracked double figures for the Lady Raiders with 10 points.
