JACKSON A 20-mile stretch of Highway 18 in Jasper County will be dedicated Thursday in honor of the late Tom Royce Green, who served eight terms as the county's sheriff.
The ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Jasper County Welfare Building Auditorium in Bay Springs. The designation was announced Friday by the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
Green, first elected in 1967, was the first Jasper County sheriff to require all deputies to be uniformed when on duty. He emphasized specialized training, even before minimum standards were set for law enforcement officers in Mississippi. He served until his retirement in 1992; he died in 2000.
