Lamar looks to begin new winning streak in playoffs

By By Will Bardwell / staff writer
Nov. 13, 2003
Instead of ending the season on a roll, Lamar will begin its postseason against Lee Academy by starting over.
After losing to Jackson Prep Sept. 5, the Raiders reeled off seven straight wins. During that stretch, they never scored less than 30 points in a game and allowed more than seven points just once.
And then Lamar ran into Hillcrest Christian.
Barnes hopes the Raiders, now 9-2 for the season, can correct their mistakes on Friday and start another streak, just as they did after their last loss.
Lamar's offense may have to improve, but the Raiders defense will face one of its stiffest challenges of the year. The Cougars enter Friday's game at 8-3 after winning seven of their last eight, including a 35-19 win over Indianola Academy in their regular season finale.
The Raiders are looking for their first playoff win under Barnes, and while he expects to win, Barnes said a fast start against the Cougars would make him feel a lot better.
If the Raiders can learn their lessons from a week ago, Barnes said Lamar will be preparing for a second-round playoff game next Friday.
