Lester Spell is anxious to continue serving the people of Mississippi as commissioner of agriculture and commerce.
Spell, a former veterinarian and mayor of Richland, said he hopes his background and experience will help him win a third straight term heading an agency that, among other things, promotes the agriculture industry.
Spell, a Democrat, will meet Republican Max Phillips of Taylorsville and Reform Party candidate Bob Claunch of Diamondhead in the Nov. 4 election. The agriculture commissioner earns $90,000 a year.
Spell said he's brought a business approach to the state Department of Agriculture and Commerce. He said his agency has a major impact on the quality of life in Mississippi.
Spell said he believes his experience separates him from his opponents.
