Bowlers returning to form

The new season is now well underway and local bowlers are beginning to find the mark as they shake off the summer cobwebs and get their games into high gear.
Highlights for the week included Rhonda Covington's first career 600 Series, a 614 set good for the high series of the week for the ladies, including a 225 game in the Dixie Belles league and new bowler James Pierce's 275 game in only his third week of competition in the Queen City league. We also saw a new high series for the week and the young season on Monday night in the Hucklebuck league when Barry Woods strung out a 277, 246 and 236 for a big 759 series. Tyrone McAlpine came close to repeating his perfect game of the week when he strung his first nine strikes before ending with a 277 game in the Ball &Chain league.
J.R. Phillips put together a nice 269, Jim Broderick Jr. turned in a 268 and both Mike Holden and Rodney Bounds had games of 267. The high game of the week went to Tim Van Doren with a 280 while on his way to a 710 series. Mike Cothern got back on track with a 728 in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. At least ten guys were able to record games in the 250s including Eric Embrey, Ray McKay, Robert Brown, Glenn Howard, Bob Timms, James Dillard, Mel Cacapit, Sam Morrison, Shayne Barfield, Mike Cothern and Rusty Thomas.
The ladies were no less active in the scoring department. In addition to Rhonda Covington's performance we also saw big games and series by several ladies. Denise Rutledge and Nonie Embrey tied for the high game of the week with a 236. Denise also recorded a 606 series during the week. Matar McClinton turned in a nice 605 and Martha Bates chalked up a 235 game. Also jumping into the scoring sweepstakes were Dot Pace with a 229, Janie Tisdale with a 222 and Cathy Jones and "Hopalong" Jane Gibson each recorded games of 221. Congratulations to the Bowlerette league Bowler of the Week Imogen Hodgins and also to the previous week's winner Mary Wicker.
The Wednesday Fun Time juniors began their second week of action with Steven Carson leading the way with a 235/541 while partner Josh Coleman fired a 227/537. Colton Dooley checked in with a 162 and Matthew Alawine added a 161. The Saturday Morning juniors got underway this week. Of course, we will be happy to add your child to our junior program this season. Contact Betty Dorough for the Wednesday program and Nita Fike to enroll your child in the Saturday league.
Ladies don't forget the deadline for entry into the 600 Bowling Club 42nd Annual Tournament is this Friday at midnight. All entries must be postmarked by that time. This year's event is being held at Park Ten Lanes in Diamondhead and is open to all WIBC bowlers who have bowled a 600 series and their 500 guest. All averages must be verified by either your league or association secretary. Entries received without verified averages will not be accepted and will be returned. Also, 600 bowlers must include yearly dues with their entry.
