Covington, Harper raise
and spend thousands

Lauderdale County supervisor candidate Sidney Covington reported she has spent $3, 240 more in her campaign through Aug. 16 than her opponent Eddie Harper.
Covington said she has spent $10,974.11 on her campaign for the District 1 seat on the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. At the same time, Harper said he has spent $7,733.41 on his campaign.
Covington and Harper meet in the Tuesday Republican Party runoff. Because no Democrats, independents or third-party candidates are running, the winner of the runoff automatically takes the job.
Covington and Harper filed campaign finance reports last week with Lauderdale County Covington filed her report Aug. 19, Harper filed his the next day. They are seeking a job that pays $37,343.04 a year.
Mississippi law requires political candidates to file regular reports showing how much money they received in campaign contributions and how much they spent in campaign expenses.
The latest report covered the period of July 27 through Aug. 16.
During that time, Covington said she received $3,199 in non-itemized campaign contributions. She said that amount increased her total contributions so far this year to $9,489.
Of the $2,930.50 in expenses she paid during the reporting period, Covington itemized $702 including $500 for a VISA bill, $52 to The Baker's Rack, $50 to the Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk and $100 to WYLS.
Harper reported he received $975 in non-itemized campaign contributions during the latest reporting period. He said that amount increased his total campaign contributions so far this year to $7,050.
Of the $558.55 in expenses he paid during the reporting period, Harper itemized $400 money he paid to WMOX.
Harper said that he expects to spend another $2,000. Covington said she will probably spend an additional $500 by Tuesday.
