Lauderdale County Supervisor Jimmie Smith is now third in line to head the Mississippi Association of Supervisors.
Smith, the District 2 county supervisor, was elected second vice president of the association during the organization's annual state convention June 16-20 in Biloxi.
Smith, 50, a Democrat, also is seeking his fifth term on the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors. Smith will meet Republican Wayman Newell in the November general election.
Smith said he will continue to serve on the association's education committee, which develops programs to educate supervisors about new legislation, leadership and communication skills.
As chair of the education committee last year, Smith said a special focus was put on leadership programs.
If re-elected this fall to the board of supervisors, Smith will automatically serve as first vice president of the association next year and then president of the association the year after.
