Union, Mize Game 3, caps big weekend

A busy weekend of playoff action in prep baseball, girls softball, junior college baseball and women's collegiate softball, comes to an end today with the third game of the Class 1A South State series.
Mize whipped Union 11-0 on Saturday night to even its best of three series with the Yellow Jackets at a game apiece. The two teams meet tonight at 6 p.m. at Laird Park in Union.
The winner of the series will meet Hamilton which completed a two-game sweep of Noxapater on Saturday night. Hamilton beat Noxapater 17-9 at Noxapater.
The loss ends Noxapater's season with a 21-8 record.
Union will take a 22-12 mark against Mize (28-4) into the game three showdown. The Yellow Jackets will have Jody Blount back on the mound. Blount threw a complete game in Thursday's 5-1 game one win.
Newton County won its second straight 3A Girls Fast-pitch Championship on Saturday beating Caledonia 8-2 to complete a two-game sweep in the title series. The Lady Cougars end the season with a 32-4 record.
The Clarkdale Lady Bulldogs were not as fortunate on Saturday. Mooreville's Elizabeth Woolven tossed a no-hitter to clinch the 1A-2A State Championship with a 4-0 decision. It was Mooreville's first championship in fast pitch after losing to Clarkdale in three games last year in Jackson.
Clarkdale ends its season with a 21-9 record.
The Meridian High Wildcats were beaten 3-0 in game two of its series with Oak Grove. Oak Grove will advance to the 5A title series.
