MCC women's net team eyes Texas trip

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles tennis team earned a trip to College Station, Texas, last Saturday.
The MCC female netters captured the MACJC State/Region 23 crown at the Northeast Tennis Complex by a five-point margin.
The Lady Eagles earned 34 points at the two-day event to outdistance themselves from last year's champion Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
MCC won five of the six championship single's matches on the tournaments final day, with Sophomores Charlotte Heidelberg, Megan Chivas and Amanda Carden winning their final games of the tourney, and freshmen Jillian Foster and Melissa Kibriel picking up victories.
Eagles freshman Bree Roberts was the only MCC player to suffer a loss in single's action.
MCC won two out of three doubles' championship matches to close out the tournament.
The Lady Eagles will compete in the National Junior College Tournament at College Station, Texas, on May 3-8.
On the diamond, the Eagles battled weather at the beginning of the week, and the Central Division-leading squad finished 3-1 for the week.
MCC was schedule to take on Hinds Community College last Tuesday, but early week rain pushed the divisional double-header back to Thursday.
The Eagles defeated Hinds in both games at Scaggs Field, with pitchers Van Pope and Todd Doolittle combining for 21 strike outs in 13 innings in the squads double-header sweep.
MCC closed the week splitting a division double-header with East Central Community College at home.
The Eagles dropped the first game 5-4, but MCC bounced back to take the second game 4-2.
On the softball diamond, MCC took two games on the road against ECCC, and the squad swept Holmes Community College.
The Lady Eagles downed the Lady Warriors 6-0 and 16-2 in the divisional double-header.
MCC earned 14-0 and 11-0 wins over Holmes last Saturday.
The Lady Eagles of Meridian Community College added an inside presence to their basketball program last Wednesday afternoon at the MCC Damon Fitness Center.
Shaquilla Mack, a 6-foot-1 power forward from Quitman High School, signed to play for the Lady Eagles next season.
East Mississippi
Community College
The East Mississippi Community College baseball team finished last week going 3-1 on the diamond.
The Lions split a closely contest Central Division double-header last Wednesday against East Central Community College, and they snatched two games from Holmes Community College at home last Saturday.
EMCC reliever Clint Richards picked up the save in the second game against ECCC to seal a 6-5, eight-inning victory at Decatur.
The Lions returned home to defeat Holmes 13-3 and 6-5.
Meridian High School graduate John Iverson singled in the winnin run of the second game for EMCC in the one-run win.
Will Matlock, who played high school ball for Northeast Lauderdale, notched the game-two victory allowing two runs in three innings of relielf work.
Andrew Lilly of Southeast Lauderdale recorded the game-one blowout win for the Lions. He struck out four batters and allowed two hits in the victory.
East Central
Community College
The East Central Community College baseball team went .500 in Central Division action last week.
The Warriors split double-headers against East Mississippi Community College last Wednesday and Meridian Community College last Satruday.
ECCC reliever Justin Darby notched the save in the first game against EMCC at home last Wednesday.
The 6-foot-2 reliever entered game one with the bases loaded, but he forced the first two batters he faced to fly out and ground out. Darby sealed the win recording a strike out.
Against MCC, the Warriors capitalized on an errant throw by the Eagles to take the first game of the Central Division double-header.
ECCC trailed MCC 4-3 before an attempted throw to second base by MCC pitcher Lance Reed to catch ECCC's Jake Nester stealing the bag sailed into the outfield.
The error allowed Warriors' Paul Brown to score from third base, with two outs, to tie the game. Dexter Sellers knocked in the go-ahead run with a double to left field to bring home Nesters.
East Central Community College added five women and two men to its basketball teams for the 2003-04 season in a ceremony at the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building last Tuesday.
Women's signees include Kim Cox and Roxana Rogers of Lake, India Backstrom of Neshoba Central, Kotreece Bender of Newton, and Kristin Chaney of Newton County.
Signing with the men are Terrence Westerfield of Kemper County and Andrew Lewis of Morton.
