Meridian School Superintendent Janet McLin said Tuesday that the city's public schools were "very fortunate" and suffered little damage from torrential rains that fell Sunday and Monday.
Lauderdale County School Superintendent David Little said his public schools also suffered minimal damage from the storm system that spawned hail, high winds and flash flooding.
Meridian and Lauderdale County public schools canceled classes Monday because of the weather. Classes resumed on Tuesday.
McLin said West End Elementary had water damage in the school office, but that custodians worked rapidly to clean it. She said the school district's central office had water, but it also caused little damage.
Little said West Lauderdale Elementary suffered minor damage and some of the schools' covered walkways were damaged.
Little could not estimate the exact cost of repairs to schools; he said the expense would be at least several thousand dollars.
Little also said that some school bus stops were flooded and that the county will work with any students who could not attend classes because of the flooding.
