Rally brings Christian community together

Nov. 15, 2002
Meridian residents of all faiths and denominations are invited to come together to share their belief in God.
Mission Mississippi, an organization dedicated to racial reconciliation, is committed to bring together the Christian community.
The organization will host "The Grace is Greater Than Race Unity Tour III" Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Frank Cochran Center in Highland Park. Refreshments will be served.
This is the third year the tour has come to Meridian. The first event was at Liberty Church, and last year the tour stopped at NorthPark Church of God.
Christians of all denominations, races, cultures and ethnic groups are invited to attend the rally.
Speakers will include Mac Barnes, Lamar High School principal and former Meridian High School football coach.
Barnes, a member of Central United Methodist Church, will talk about his relationship with Lamar assistant football coach William McNeil the first black coach at the school.
Barnes believes the event will bring the community together: "I support it 100 percent. I'm glad to be a part of the event."
Dolphus Weary, executive director of Mission Mississippi, will also speak. Weary was named executive director in 1998 and immediately began an expansion effort to move the reconciliation effort beyond Jackson.
Mayor John Robert Smith will give the opening prayer and WTOK-TV news anchor Andrea Williams will serve as master of ceremonies.
Said Charlotte Scott: "The rally is a way to lay aside all race and cultural divisions and demonstrate to the community that it's about coming together in unity in the body of Christ."
