MCC men take opener

The Eagles of Meridian Community College opened their season with a convincing 95-71 win over host Mary Holmes College on Monday. Jamal Edmondson led MCC with 27 points, while Kenny Boyd scored 19 and Willie Powers hit for 12.
Pearl River 84
EMCC men 59
Yandell Brown scored 18 points and James Ball and Ray Selvage both added 14 each as Pearl River routed East Mississippi 84-59 on Monday night in Scooba. It was the season opener for both schools. Lance Jemison and Davarrius Hairston scored 10 points apiece and Tramechie Evans added eight for the Lions.

EMCC women 54
The Pearl River women took a 69-54 win over host EMCC on Monday. Audosha Kelley had 15 for the Lady Wildcats. Yolanda Thomas had 11, while C.C. Glover and Darnika Washington each had nine for the Lady Lions.
Wayne 27
Lamar girls 21
Homestanding Wayne Academy outscored Lamar 11-6 in the final quarter to take the six-point win over the Lady Raiders in the season opener for both teams. Erin Wood scored nine and Hope McRae tossed in eight to lead the Lady Jaguars, while Cheryl Luquire led Lamar with seven points.
In junior high action Fonda Cooley scored 11 points to lead Wayne to a 35-25 win. Emily Thompson scored six for Lamar.
Itawamba 53
ECCC women 49
The Lady Warriors dropped a four-point decision to Itawamba Community College on the road on Monday night. Lenore Gray led ECCC with 16 points.
, while Rita Birden hit for nine.
ECCC hosts Shelton (Ala.) State in women's and men's action at 6 p.m. Thursday and East Mississippi at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
