Nov. 1, 2002
The winning entry in Riley Hospital's fourth annual pumpkin carving contest Thursday was created by the hospital's surgical services department.
The display showed "Dr. Jack O'Lantern" and "Nurse Trixie Treats" performing an "exploratory pumpkinotomy" on patient "Melon E. Pumpkinseed" who complained of "vine pain secondary to an infestation of cucumber beetles."
A total of 28 departments participated in the contest.
Other department winners included:
Most original: Admissions, for depicting a two-faced pumpkin admissions clerk after a 12-hour work day.
Funniest award: Business office, for depicting a sick patient.
Most elegant: Riley Children's Therapy Center, for its version of Cinderella in her pumpkin carriage.
Most mysterious: Nutritional services, for its carving of a trick-or-treater.
Most ghoulish: Maintenance, for its carving of the grim reaper.
