Meridian man escapes from work crew

A Meridian man who had been held in the Lauderdale County jail since Sept. 10 faces escape charges after leaving the Meridian police station at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Meridian Police Chief Benny DuBose said Marcus J. Rew, 21, was assigned to pick up trash along roadsides after being arrested Sept. 10 for contempt of court.
Capt. Roger Welborn said that Rew had been in jail because he failed to pay a fine related to a charge of possession of marijuana. Welborn said Rew had been assigned on Friday to roadside work.
Welborn said Rew began roadside work Friday and for some reason didn't work Monday.
Welborn said Rew showed up Tuesday and worked along the roads before removing the orange jump suit he was wearing and leaving during lunch.
DuBose also said Rew will again face contempt of court charges.
