Derrick G. McDaniel of Meridian has enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard.
His recruiter, Sgt. 1st Class Ray Turnage, said McDaniel joined the Detachment 1, Company B, 150th Combat Engineer Battalion in Quitman. He will be a combat engineer and receive a $3,000 enlistment bonus.
As a National Guardsman, McDaniel is eligible to benefit from the Montgomery GI Bill, which pays up to $472 a month while he attends college as a full-time student. He can also receive assistance from the State Tuition Assistance Program, which pays up to $1050 a semester to a four-year college or $525 a semester to a two-year college.
McDaniel will attend basic and advanced training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. He is the son of Sophia R. McDaniel.
Jimmy Dubose of Meridian has enlisted in the Mississippi Army National Guard.
Dubose, an incoming senior at Meridian High School, joined Detachment 1, Company B, 150th Engineer Battalion in Quitman. His recruiter, Sgt. 1st Class Ray Turnage, said he will be a combat engineer and receive a $3,000 enlistment bonus.
As a guardsman, Dubose is eligible to receive up to $472 a month while he attends college as a full-time student. He can also receive assistance from the State Tuition Assistance Program, which pays up to $1,050 a semester to a four-year college, or $525 a semester to a two-year college.
